Wheaton/Warrenville Early Childhood Collaborative

Local

A Good Idea

Description

The Wheaton/Warrenville Early Childhood Collaborative (WWECC) is a group of community agencies, early childhood providers, and supporters of early childhood in DuPage County working together to improve kindergarten/school readiness for children in Community Unit School District 200 with a focus on increasing access to services for those in under-resourced areas of the community.

Goal / Mission

The mission of the Wheaton/Warrenville Early Childhood Collaborative is to effectively coordinate services focused on providing opportunities for learning success and improved Kindergarten readiness for all Community Unit School District 200 children birth to five, especially those most vulnerable.

The 4 goals of the WWECC are:
1. Improve communication among early childhood service providers though implementation of collaborative partner and sub-committee meetings.
2. Increase parent education about childhood development needs.
3. Increase professional development for early childhood service providers.
4. Increase children's Kindergarten/school readiness.

Impact

This targeted program can have a strong impact, as research shows that 85% of brain development occurs by age 5 and that high-quality early care and education experiences lead to lower drop-out rates, lower rates of becoming a teen parent, and lower rates of participation in special education.

Results / Accomplishments

The WWECC works to implement solutions by:
-Promoting the coordination of existing services, and creating improved communication between service delivery agencies, early childhood programs and elementary education settings.
-Creating a common language for early learning and children's development milestones and promoting parents' support of their children's growth and learning.
-Providing information and resources on developmental screenings to ensure children with developmental delays are identified early for needed services.
-Helping providers understand public school system readiness goals for children and how to develop strategies for engaging parents in children's learning.
-Offering opportunities for providers' growth and development to increase knowledge and skills needed to best serve children and families.
-Achieving the outlined goals.
-Linking families to additional services and providing resources where needed.
-Leveraging resources to bring additional early childhood services and programs needed to the Wheaton/Warrenville Community.

These goals align with the priorities set by the Illinois Early Learning Council, Illinois Early Learning Guidelines, Illinois State Board of Education, and the Great at Eight Policy framework developed by Voices for Illinois Children, which seeks to build family-engaged systems that follow children from early childhood services to the public education system.
