Preventive Nutrition Cardiovascular Disease Program

A Good Idea

Description

LHANC's Preventive Nutrition Cardiovascular Disease Program provides dietitian-led nutrition education and counseling to Hispanic seniors in senior centers in Miami-Dade's Little Havana area. The program offers group sessions and interactive activities, and aids participants in goal setting and monitoring. The American Heart Association Eating Plan for Healthy Americans is used as the basis for the program.

Goal / Mission

The goals of this project are:
- to increase knowledge of nutrition among Hispanic elders who are at risk for cardiovascular disease and obesity;
- to foster behavior change through group sessions and interactive activities; and
- to test whether the American Heart Association guidelines and materials can be utilized in a dietitian led model targeted to Hispanic elders.

Results / Accomplishments

The program is offered to high-risk seniors in 14 LHANC centers.
